Joffrey - a young student I met on the flight from Amsterdam to Entebbe, via Kigali. He just finished his engineering degree in the US and was heading home. A great conversation about the transformation of Rwanda.

Victoria - Biomass Briquettes - Uganda - looking to start a business with her.

Edie - Slow Food International, Slow Food Uganda, 10,000 Gardens in Africa - school garden & community gardens are just around the corner for us.

Fred - J.E.E.P. - fuel efficient institutional sized stoves - will be installing one in the school within the next month or so.

Todd - he visited us from Kigali, Rwanda, a friend of David's originally from Portland. Interesting to hear how Rwanda is developing.

Students from BYU - can't remember their names at the moment, both working on creating science experiments that can be used in rural Uganda without a huge science lab. They may be visiting Victoria in August!

Henry - Nelson's friend from Katwe, so knowledgeable and willing to share information about the environment with the teachers.

Kevin - from Huntington Beach, CA - working a documentary about Malaria - the forgotten epidemic. He had amazing videos on wildlife that he shot - it was like going to the movies every night.

James & Michael - brothers from near Mount Elgin. James, a young doctor, is working with Kevin and others to build a medical clinic in his small town. Michael is a long haul driver. We had two amazing dinners & conversations with Kevin, James, Michael, Ali, Linda & myself. At one point they were telling us about the things that happen in Uganda, they were all laughing and both Linda and I had jaws that were dropping and faces of disbelief.

Kate - working on her Masters in Africa but also volunteering at Unite for the Environment -Uganda. It is a program that brings conservation education to schools.

Ali - our driver, no scrap that, our friend. He has taught us so much about Uganda.

...and I still have the flight home!
We were able to meet and get know eight of them as one is away right now as she is quite ill. We had individual meetings with each of the teachers and also group meetings to talk about salaries, responsibilities and general discussions around what is working and what is not.

Linda did professional development with the teachers. The students were writing mid-terms during the week so this gave teachers a bit of free time to take part. As well there was a full day workshop on a Saturday.
When I visited last year the students had asked about doing a school newsletter. It was one of those things we did not get to so I definitely wanted to make it happen this year. Aaron met with all the students in the first week and brainstormed with those groups about what a newsletter is and what they might want to include in a newsletter. At the beginning of the second week I met with eight students and started the process of creating the newsletter.

We talked about the content, the layout and of course the name. They chose the name 'The Sun' as it represented the statement 'Our school enables us to shine and grow'. After a few meetings we had nailed down the layout and everyone had their assignments and the amount of space for their information. This first newsletter is 8 1/2 x 11 and one sided.

At the beginning of the last week we had edited the content and had a draft. They made a few adjustments and were happy with the final copy. I was able to do the layout on Publisher and then had it printed. The teachers and students received a copy and there were additional copies for distribution in the community. The students chose to write about how much they love their school and what it means to be a student at M.L.S.S.

I have a date with them for the third week of September - they will send me their content and I will put together the second newsletter for them from Canada.

Water catchment is finished. The tap is on the other side and there is a trench that flows away from the tank and it is lined with gravel to avoid a mess in the rainy season or just from regular spills. A jerry can is able to easily fit under the tap and does not have to be lifted at all. As well a hose at the top of the tank is being affixed so when there is overflow (a certainty in the rainy season), it can flow into the garden area and hopefully into another tank when we have the budget for it.
There were left over bricks from a few projects so a new composting/garbage area has been created. The composting area will come in handy when the 10,000 Gardens in Africa project starts in August. Unfortunately too much plastic has crept into the lives of those in Bwera. One of these bins will be used to store this and in the meantime we need to find a way to use less plastic and/or recycle it. There are no local alternatives so it will be a research project for my 2017 visit!

This is going to cause a flurry of posts before I leave at 9:30 tonight for the airport. I want to thank the people who took time to find us cameras and a printer to use in the photography lessons. Yes, the students really just wanted to take photos of themselves but Aaron was able to show them how a straight-on photo could be made better by thinking about a few things before hitting the shutter button. We are spending some time looking at the big picture and how
the plan for the school grounds is evolving.
Obtaining good water is always an issue and also a cost. We have decided to move the water tank, as
well as elevating it. There will be room
for another tank if that fits the budget in the future. As well we are adding gutters to the other
school building, the latrine and the kitchen.
All these buildings have metal roofs so they will be able to help with
water catchment.
Before I tell you all those stories I wanted to share the kindness that has come our way.

Our driver Ali has been beyond amazing. He is always taking care of us by letting us know the customs, the reasons things are happening a certain way and by checking on how everyone is doing. Besides being an excellent driver, he is shown himself to be a natural teacher. His time at the school has been spent working with the students as well as sitting in on discussions. His input has been valuable. After our friend Todd left to go back to Kigali, he followed up with him without us even thinking about it, to make sure he had a safe journey. His wife Zubedah came and stayed with us on Saturday & Sunday. On our way to airport on the trip home we will stop at their home to meet their son Abraham!

At Simba Safara Camp the staff is outstanding. The kitchen staff takes care of us each day with great food and also adjusting meals so they are smaller or have certain things we like. Breakfast is now fresh fruit, toast (homemade bread) and coffee. Dinner is always a surprise. They have been making delicious soup each night with dinner. The beet soup was our favorite - we have asked for a repeat. The cook is a young women who always has a smile! They love to hear about our day and they let us know what new guests have arrived.

The students wrote down their stories - they were very revealing and heartbreaking. They loved the photography sessions and learning about depth of field, leading lines, pattern & more...in addition to taking photos of their friends. The high energy interactive classes that taught them about critical thinking, the water cycle and perspective were a challenge well received.

Today was the last day at the school for the whole group. Linda and I will be back for two more weeks. It was hard for everyone to say goodbye as they are just starting to get to know the students. It has been the beginning of a friendship that will be hard to continue because of distance but also due to poor or complete absence of the internet.
The sewing class is open to women and also girls who may not have completed their studies at school. We will be discussing a project with them next week that will have them sewing uniforms for all the students in the school. Monies have been donated to purchase all of the fabric to make this happen - thank you to the Ideba team!
We said our final goodbye to the students and they were so disappointed that people were leaving. One of the students piped up and said 'Since this is your last day, could you stay overnight at the school?'. In light of how much fun we had at the end of the day yesterday, we created another 'sports afternoon' from about 3:00 - 4:30. There were groups playing soccer, volleyball, frisbee and lacrosse. Others were watching, sitting under the trees and there was lots of smiles & laughter. This relaxed atmosphere encouraged great conversations and allowed us to see personalities show through.
We arrived around 9:00 am today and our first task was to meet our new goat. We have named the goat Obomaisy (sp) which means 'to give life' in Swahili. The amazing part was that it was determined after she was purchased that she was pregnant.
We arrived a little late which ended up being a little early in the whole scheme of things as the program was delayed an hour or so. We had an amazing day of music, dance, sports and games with the students, teachers & community.
With our waiting time we introduced the students to several games and that allowed us to get to know them in a less formal, fun way. The weather was overcast in the morning so it was perfect for the start of our day at the school. Later in the day we presented them with the soccer uniforms that were donated by the Bays United Football Club. I pulled one out of the bag and they exploded in cheers and clapping. On Sunday morning we were up and out by 8:15 am. Our driver Ali is amazing. He had spent the evening and morning looking for a new tire - not an easy feat on a Saturday night or Sunday morning in this region. We traveled to Bwera town to meet up with Nelson. Nelson is the main contact PODA has in Uganda and he is also the Director of the school that PODA built.

We walked through a number of villages during the morning and early afternoon. We always had an entourage of children following us.

Nelson had identified villagers that were most in need and we brought gifts of rice and water for them. We came to one village where that week a women's goat had been stolen. She is a widower and also has HIV. The milk that the goat provided was vital to keep her and her family healthy. On the spot our group decided that a new goat would be purchased for her. It will be delivered to her likely on Tuesday.

The internet has not been available for a few days so you are going to get a few posts in the next few hours! We loaded up the van and left the hotel in Kampala just after 8:00 am with our driver Ali. The day before we made bets as to the arrival time of our van & driver - being the ever optimist I said he would arrive early (7:58) and that was the case - and here is the money shot!

We took the northern route via Fort Portal, not a route I had taken before. I loved the beautiful scenery in this area. I would recommend The Duchess restaurant in Fort Portal. Reviews had indicated it was probably the best food in Uganda - they weren't stretching it. It was excellent and very reasonable. A nice respite before continuing on to Kasese and then Simba Safari Camp.
After a full day journey we hobbled into Simba with a flat tire. We were climbing the final hill up to the entrance, literally 500 metres from the entrance and a tire blew. Everyone quickly helped with removing luggage, getting our rooms organized, removing and replacing the tire. Such an amazing group of people.

Simba is great and has excellent food, staff, service and basic but good rooms. A good night sleep was had in this dark, very quiet location.
When things work out, they really work out. Today was a day when energy and enthusiasm aligned. Our first meeting of the day was at 11:00 with Victoria. Victoria is an entrepreneur who runs a biomass briquette making business. She is a former teacher with further education in project & business management. Her business model is a great package of equipment, training, marketing, accounting with further options to enhance and expand your business down the road. She ended up spending the day with us as the two other people we were meeting throughout the day fit so well into what she is doing.

Our second meeting was with Edie Mukiibi of Slow Food International. He is the VP of the overall organization as well heading up the Ugandan chapter. He is also leading the 10,000 Gardens in Africa project through his office in Uganda. He will be visiting the school next week as we discuss sponsoring a school garden as well as a community garden. The training and ongoing support this garden project provides will be beneficial to the students and members of the community.
What was a common thread today was how each of these organizations provided not only the product or service they represented, but also provided training and a sense of community. These three organizations were also pleased to be introduced to each other and were excited about what we are doing in Uganda.

On the Road Again

Well the ride back to Entebbe/Kampala does not get any shorter. The tea fields through the Mbarara area are beautiful. We stopped in Masaka for lunch and tried to find the place Linda & I tried a few years back. It is still in the current guide books but it is a shell of its former self. We all had French fries as nothing else looked appealing - the fries were good!

We took a 'short cut' to bypass Kampala as it is very busy at the end of the day but nothing ever seems easy. It was shorter but probably hotter, bumpier and definitely dustier. It is all part of the experience.

We were rewarded by arriving at Karibu Guest House and a warm welcome and a promise of a good meal. We have a long journey home tomorrow. It has been an adventure travelling with people I have just met (except for David - meaning I know him, not that it wasn't an adventure!). We have learned a lot about each other and have made fun of the Canadian/US differences eh!

Thank you again to everyone who supports PODA - we are lucky to have you along for the ride.
Getting things started

This trip it felt like we got a lot of things started. Now that they know me it is possible to sit and have conversations in Uganda about projects and ideas...and then finish them long distance via email and money transfer if applicable.

The day started with us stopping in Kasese to pick up mosquito nets for the students and the teachers. This has been something they identified on their need list and something we could do immediately and it definitely brought cheers and smiles from everyone.
Angela & John spent time with the students in the late morning talking about journal writing and brain stormed what you could use a journal for. I showed them how to make their own journal. We had the help of two of the teachers that were familiar with computers to start putting the school newspaper on the computer. They are using Publisher and Angela reviewed with them the concept of editing and how important it will be to teach to the students involved in the newspaper about editing. Many of their contributions were quite long so editing will be necessary.

We were treated to a walk through the community just before leaving for the day. It was a hot one but it is great for visitors to get an 'on the ground' look at the area around the school.
We gave them 'The Moon'

The day started with Angela & John meeting with the student council to talk about what they want for the school. They narrowed down a list of wishes to several things that they could all agree were the priority for the school. These included a school newspaper, mosquito nets, concrete floors for the classrooms, sports equipment and school goats.

This discussion led into on the development of a school newspaper. The group now includes the student council as well as the Writers Club that has been started at the MLSS. The students decided to call their school newspaper 'The Moon' because the moon is bright and guides them in the dark.
As well in the morning we started the construction of the 'tippy tap' out by the latrines. They are also developing more land at the back of the school. When the school was constructed all the extra soil was piled behind the school and now it is being excavated to make room for more planting and they are using the soil to make bricks for the school gate and the house for the school director. For those of you who were involved in the school build, that is Robert in the yellow, the young man who could work wonders with our clothes!
After lunch Angela & John started on a record painting project that they had brought from Portland. Their daughter Tayliah is spearheading this project and back in Portland she will be selling the painted records that the students complete. The proceeds will go to the school and will fund some of the needs the students identified today.

The day ended with a change of plans. Nelson has been called away to work so we will not see him on the final day. Part of his job as a park warden is to be the liaison between the communities that live in the park and the Uganda Wildlife Association (UWA). A lion in Queen Elizabeth Park has killed one of the villagers and Nelson needs to leave to speak with the community members and work with them through this terrible time.

Mweya to Marguerita

We were up early to witness another beautiful sunrise and enjoy the perfect temperature that the morning brings. This is the sunrise from the Mweya Lodge.

We headed into Kasese and on the way we checked out some other accommodation options. I am always curious how far or close the website version of a hotel compares to the real live version. We were satisfied that Hotel Marguerita was the place for us.

We met up with Nelson in Kasese at the Jambo Café so we could do some supply shopping for our next two days at the school. It was around 30 degrees with a whole lot of humidity. The Jambo Café is a great little respite from the heat.

Back at the hotel and time to cool down and do some planning for tomorrow. The veranda offers just the right mix of shade and view.
The early bird gets the worm

We were up by 5:30 this morning so we could be on the road before the sunrise. Once the sun starts to rise here, it rises very quickly. You didn't feel the least bit tired when you were greeted with a view like this.
Queen Elizabeth Park Here We Come

We are off to spend a couple of days in Queen Elizabeth Park. After leaving Kasese, we made our first stop at the equator sign.

Once in the park, after a detour to get park entrance requirements - always a little extra something to take care before the fun begins! The delay ended up being well worth it as we came upon a herd of elephants on the road to the lodge. I was in the very back seat so photo taking was not great but I will post more once we share photos. We unknowingly had got in between them and we heard a very large growl from one of them. This got our attention - he or she was warning the others of our arrival. There was a baby with them so you really needed to stay back so we stopped the car and waited for them to pass.

Mpondwe Lhubiriha Secondary School Part Two - An Afternoon of Music, Dance & Smiles

Just before lunch we were entertained by the Tailoring Class. They performed a song and dance. Each of the pieces of music that we've heard today have been written specifically for our visit. The lyrics are giving thanks to the work and support that PODA has given to the school and the community. The Tailoring Class is now about twenty four in number and are comprised of young women who did not complete their formal schooling and are now learning tailoring as a vocation.
We headed back to Kasese for the evening and before sunset enjoyed the view of the Rwenzori Mountains, then very quickly the light faded and you were left with the beautiful sounds of nature.

A lot can happen in a day!

We started the day experiencing the sights and sounds of the hills around our hotel in Kasese. Nature had a dimmer switch and slowly the world around us was waking up.

We drove to the school with a brief stop in Bwera to get drinks and try our luck at the cash machine - all were successful. We arrived at the school by 10:00 am and the program began. It was so good to see Nelson & Robina, along with teachers and students who were familiar. As well I got to meet new teachers and students. The community had come out to participate and the COBRA organization members. As the morning rolled along many more from the community gathered to see what was happening.

We first received a tour of the school to show the progress that had been made. They are trying to build on the agriculture program at the school and have purchased another plot of land behind the school to achieve that.

The basics of the latrines have been built and the finishing touches will be addressed over the next year.

The choir and other school groups performed for us. Mr. Allen joined in and this was awesome as it encouraged others to get up as well. You can see Robina (teacher & school bursar) enjoying the dance (sorry about the tree in the photo).

There was an art exchange with the students at Hillsboro Elementary School and our school (MLSS). Hillsboro gave each student at MLSS a friendship bracelet along with books, art and journals about themselves. Mr. & Mrs. Allen put a bracelet on each of the students. The MLSS students provided art and crafts that can be brought back to the school in Hillsboro.
What time is it in Uganda?

Well, I would have to say it is bedtime! We had a very long day getting across the country. Here we are looking somewhat rested and ready to go this morning. We had breakfast together before loading our many bags onto the vehicle.
No photo this evening, you might not recognize us! It is going to be a big day at the school tomorrow. More photos from today to follow. Everyone's travel to Uganda went well and luggage arrived safely - extra special since the luggage has such great things for the school in them, especially those made by the students at Hillsboro Elementary School.
